Nutritional Deficiencies in Children

We all love our kids and want them to grow strong both intellectually and physically. We take utmost care in their growth, yet, sometimes they fall prey to some kind of deficiencies. Nutritional deficiencies also are known as malnutrition, which means that the body is not nourished enough with the nutrients it needs.

Instead of blaming ourselves and doubting on our upbringing, we can learn from the cause and find measures to overcome them. Most of the deficiencies are genetic or pre-determined; however, if we check on our nutritional diet, we can avoid such deficiencies or rectify the issue.

Some of the nutritional deficiencies are:

1>           Hyperactivity- Children suffering from this problem tend to be impulsive and do things without thinking. Hyperactivity is a problem related to digestion. Children who are hyperactive have poor bacterial flora and digestion. It is recommended that high-protein; low sugar and supplements like fish oil and zinc need to be added in diet, which can keep hyperactivity in check.

2>           Delayed speech – It might be surprising that delayed speech is actually the deficiency of vitamin B12. It is recommended not to supplement with vitamin B12 until it is not medically confirmed. However, you can supplement with food that is rich in vitamin B12. Beef, chicken, pork, dairy, and eggs are rich in Vitamin B12.

Hard fact: There are no grains or plants source that supplement Vitamin B12

3>           Depression or Anxiety:   Children suffering from depression may have the difficulty in sleeping suffer from mood swings, loss of energy, low self-esteem; get thoughts of death and suicide.

Amino acids which help to create neurotransmitters help to keep us feeling happy and calm instead of feeling depressed or anxious, therefore, the food should contain good protein as high protein food contains amino acids.

Hard fact:  Plants have incomplete amino acids; however animal food contains all the required amino acid and can be absorbed by the body.

4>           Cavities: Please do not think that cavities are the result of having too many candies or sweets; it is the result of a deficiency in minerals and in fat soluble vitamins. Therefore include them in your diet, so that you kids can enjoy all kinds of food without dental issues.

5>           Crowding of Teeth:  You do not want to be responsible for crowding of teeth, but, that is a hard fact, crowding of teeth has a close relationship with nutritional deficiencies. A rich diet full of fats, animal proteins, and carbs can help the child get the healthy set of straight, inline teeth.

6>           Cranky emotions:  Good mood stabilization can be obtained from fats such as Omega 3 found in salmon, sardines etc.  Saturated fats from butter, coconut oil can protect the omega 3 in our brain and also a high amount of estrogen can make kids irritable and moody. A carrot per day can absorb the extra estrogen from the body, thus help in maintaining hormonal balance naturally.

7>           Obesity:  Kids crave for junk food which does not contain the dense nutrients and hence leave them hungry and they end up eating more food than the limit. Therefore, include the food which satisfies their hunger and taste.  Seafood, animal products, raw milk, cheese, butter, coconut oil, fruits, vegetables, and grains have nutrients which are nourishing and tasty too.

8>           Flu and cold: If the kid suffers from frequent cold and flu, check the diet and change the pattern and focus on specific nutrients that can improve their immunity level. A healthy diet always keeps the kids from sickness.
